MISSION
The Department of Genetics (LGN) has had its mission clear since it was founded, in 1936, integrating the initial composition of the University of São Paulo. The mission established is to educate human resources: professionals with excellence in Genetics, both in the undergraduate and graduate levels, to work in the public and private sectors and in teaching and research in the Genetics field, focusing mainly on Genetics and Plant Breeding. The mission to teach, educate, form professionals and develop quality research that impact the society in Brazil and abroad remains at the core of LGN. However, the evolution of Genetics results in working in many other areas that were gradually introduced and established at LGN over the years and even recently, which areas hold a role as important as those existing since its beginning, with a harmonic interaction between old and new techniques and knowledge. Moreover, LGN has also been active in the new undergraduate courses created as well as in the more traditional ones.
VISION and VALUES
The Department of Genetics vision is to: remain a national and international reference in all its areas of activity, as a center of excellence in Education, Research and Extension in Genetics and Breeding; to remain in the forefront of Genetics and Breeding knowledge, considering our country’s current and future needs, meeting society’s demands with an innovative view and, also, to maintain a highly qualified body of professors and non-teaching employees. This vision is supported by the Values of innovation and creativity in research and teaching, with a constant search for excellence; efficiency and efficacy in the quality of teaching; ethics and social and environmental responsibility in relation to the instituted values; preservation and appreciation of life; integration of all Department’ sectors and transparent team work, a spirit of collaboration, innovation, cordiality and respect of the diversity. Therefore, LGN follows the premise of maintaining all its activities in line with the evolution and changes in the area, to provide the best quality possible.
